Fatal falls at work continue to be the top killer last year, resulting in 18 deaths in workplaces. Such work at height incidents are preventable as we can all take steps to make working at height safer for our workers. Besides worker injuries, companies who do not take sufficient measures to prevent falls will suffer from time and productivity losses from work stoppage, loss of employee morale and direct damages arising from the incidents.

To assist the industry, the WSH Council-led National Work at Height Taskforce, together with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), has launched numerous initiatives to get more workplaces to implement the Fall Prevention Plan, a comprehensive stepped process to manage work at height hazards. For example, we help small companies through the Safety Compliance Assistance visits, as well as rolled out a line management course on WAH. Nevertheless, more work needs to be done as we aim to get 100% of workplaces to have a Fall Prevention Plan in place.

At the upcoming Work at Height Symposium 2011, we will highlight the plans to help us achieve this goal. I will also share the achievements and outcomes of the industry in the past year and how we intend to scale up efforts to bring down the WAH fatalities and injuries. The upcoming Work At Height Symposium will greatly benefit you and your company, with technical information and best practices to help you better address fall from height hazards.

You are cordially invited to participate in this session. Please register online at www.wshc.sg, under the “Events Calendar” before 15 March 2011. We look forward to seeing you at the Symposium and thank you for your support to help us build safe and healthy workplaces for all.

Yours sincerely,
Wong Weng Sun
Chairman, National Work at Height Taskforce
